“I Am Because You Are: Connecting Hearts Across the African Diaspora.”
The Ubuntu Hearts Project (UHP)strengthens bonds of care and solidarity between Black communities in South Africa and the United States through an annual gift-giving initiative that supports children, families, and elders in need. Guided by the African philosophy of Ubuntu—“I am because you are”—the project affirms that our humanity is rooted in collective care, compassion, and shared responsibility. Through acts of generosity and relationship-building, UHP nurtures heart-to-heart connections across the African Diaspora while honoring traditions of communal support that have sustained Black communities for generations.
The Ubuntu Hearts Project envisions a world in which Black communities across the African Diaspora are connected through compassion, shared responsibility, and mutual support. By cultivating relationships grounded in Ubuntu, UHP seeks to inspire a global community where collective care uplifts children, honors elders, and strengthens families for generations to come.
